“Mountain of the Will-O-Wisps” by honrupi

She sought out smoke,
to find a fire.
It seemed a joke,
her latent desire.

Once upon a cloud, in crimson skies,
she came to find, the very right guy.
With a smile on his lips, and a gleam in his eyes,
at last she resolved, she would genuinely try.

Yet little did she know, a hidden promise was made,
lifetimes entwined, debts to be paid.
Within the eye of her chosen guy,
she could not sense his solemn sigh.

For nothing is more sacred than a promise kept,
‘less one be stung by warm tears of regret.
She could not fathom the urge to fight,
taking her animosity, to ever great heights.

The union became tainted by ego and pride,
marred by wounds each preferred to hide.
In her soul she scoffed the pledge,
opting instead, to drive a wedge.

Memories soon fogged, happiness was blurred,
touch grew numb and speech became slurred.
It wasn’t long before he felt hexed,
quite certain she would die, alone and perplexed.

“Oh, speak softly!” she cried as he cursed,
watching with confusion as the flame dispersed.
It was then she heard the demonic joke,
and discovered the reason, why she enjoyed being choked.

To harken onto love is to move the heart,
surrendering oneself to its counterpart.
The horse was placed before the cart,
she decided the ending by ignoring the start.

Dancing will o’wisps in a dream of seas,
painted leaves upon scarred trees.
It gives me no comfort, no maniacal glee,
to cast such words into sad poetry.

For I am the one who was lead astray,
broken down by dreams of heresy.
The things she would promise, the words she would say,
delicately marked with the caveat of…

…“Someday.”
