I had a friend who used to draw hilarious cartoons. I vividly remember one where a guy is taking a bath and a log of crap is seen floating in a bubble above the tub with question marks around the guys head. He didn’t monetize it or sought out a career in writing comics. He just did it for the lulz. I think a lot memes today are created without monetization in mind. Unless you consider getting attention on social media a form of compensation, in which the artist is still getting rewarded and appreciated without money involved.
