I think the word “artist” is nebulous when looking for a correlation between creativity and discontent. You would first have to establish parameters, such as artists who are technically proficient (those who draw and paint) and artists with high creative thinking and imagination. You could be a heck of a good writer but lousy at drawing for instance.

A good approach to answering this question is to put together a list of exceptionally creative people and then see what their upbringing was like. Kurt Cobain, Leonardo Da Vinci, Van Gogh would all fall into the tortured artist category and are considered revolutionaries in their field.

It’s rare to find a well adjusted artist who produces great art that does not exhibit discontent, angst or trauma in their work. In my opinion, anyways.

Look into Henry Darger. He is such a strange case to examine. A loner who produced works of art and fiction and died without wanting to share it with anyone. I’ve always felt his life provided important clues as to where creativity comes from and why people choose to express it.
