Serpents by Gustav Klimt (1907)

I thank you for the memories, the feelings and pains.
The deceit, the false promises the dreams that never became.
I thank you for your touch, your smile, your eyes upon my own,
I thank you for sharing all that we’ve grown.

My mind wanders off into the past, reflecting on each year.
Flipping through the catalogue of all of your fears.
To bring me to the realization of why I was near,
A service to illuminate the nature of your tears.

For in darkness, your cleverness and rebellious pride,
You could not find courage to choose a side.
Instead you chosen your love to hide,
Allowing direction by the whims of the tide.

All of the stars, the suns and signs,
Could not in their power cause you to align.
Your fears have wrapped themselves tightly with cords of twine,
Awaiting prayers at the nearest shrine.

I wish you blessings, in a future more bright,
One that will grant you a keener insight.
Whenever you tremble with confusion or fright,
Seek comfort in knowing that we once held a light.
